Kelowna home maintenance: 3 exterior tips for spring
As a general rule, winters in Kelowna are some of the best in Canada, but winter 2018 felt like the winter that wouldn’t end, mostly because of the snow. Anecdotally, it was a very unusual winter for Kelowna, but thankfully with the clocks ‘springing forward’ tonight, spring is just around the corner, and with it, warmer weather. Kelowna has many draws, but the warm summer weather has to be one of the most significant.
As we move into spring, we thought we’d offer some home maintenance tips for Kelowna homeowners. Get these chores checked off your list this spring, and you’ll be able to enjoy a hot Kelowna summer in just a few short months.
Check out your roof shingles
Spring is a great time to examine your roof shingles/tiles. Winter and summer are the most challenging seasons for roofs so check to see how your roof got on in winter and make sure it is ready for summer. Of course, keep an eye out for any damaged (cracked or loose) or lost shingles. If you notice issues with flashing around your chimney, vents or skylights, or significant damage to your roof, you will need to contact a qualified roofer.
Inspect your gutters
While you’re on your roof, take a look at your gutters. Make sure your downspouts are free of debris and that they’re draining away from the foundation of your home. Keep an eye out for leaks - remember; water can find its way into the tiniest of gaps or cracks.
Examine exterior faucets
Speaking of water, once you’re safely down from the roof, take a look at your exterior faucets. The mercury hit some cold temperatures this past winter, and you’ll want to look for signs of freeze damage. A good test is to turn the water on and place your thumb over the opening. If you are able to stem the flow of water with your thumb, chances are there’s an issue with the pipe and you’ll want to call a plumber.
Make sure your A/C unit is functioning properly ahead of Kelowna’s hot summer months.
