3 Must do Tips to Prepare your Home for the Fall

Fall is officially here. The autumn is perhaps the most beautiful time of year in Kelowna (and that’s really saying something) - the days of 30+ degrees are behind us and there’s a crispness in the morning air, but the sun still shines warming us up by the afternoon.

The thermostat hasn’t plummeted too significantly just yet, but that’s all the more reason to complete these tasks before it does - here are three ‘must-do’ tips to prepare your Kelowna home for the fall and winter seasons ahead...

1)      Top of the house is your top priority - when it comes to preparing your Kelowna property for the colder months, you should start with your roof. Be sure to replace any missing, buckled or damaged shingles.

2)      Fight the colder air from the inside out - after you’ve given your roof a clean bill of health, the attic is your next stop. You should maintain a minimum of 12-15 inches of blown-in insulation in your attic at any given time, but especially during the colder parts of the year.

3)      Hit the cold with a shutout - in the colder autumn and winter months, weatherstripping and caulking are your friends. Rubberized caulking is the way to go, as it has more give and will be effective for longer. Check the caulking around doors, windows and vents - you’re looking for cracking, a sign that the caulking is failing. Take a peek at the weatherstripping around your doors and feel for any drafts.

Kelowna has one of the best winter climates in all of Canada, but don’t let that fool you - you’ll still want to make sure your home is adequately prepared for the autumn and winter. At the very least, you’ll save a few dollars on your energy costs.
